Blossom's Planet

   Blossom Dearie is the undisputed queen of piano and original jazz. Her sweet and soft, yet fresh and strongly backed voice has performed the widest array of songs possible. From her bossa nova like "I'm Shadowing You" to her piano rendition of "Send in the Clowns" to the samba beat of "Inside A Silent Tear" she has proven that she can perform almost any material like no one else.                                 
   The name "Blossom" was given to her because when she was born, her brothers brought fresh pear blossoms into the house. Her name (Dearie) originates from Scotland/Ireland, it is a Celtic name, yes Blossom Dearie is her real name. When Miss Dearie performs she is very particular, no smoking, selling drinks etc. during her act. She created an intermission so the club would be able to sell drinks and she could sell her music.
   She was also the first performer to create a direct mailing list to her fans. She recorded at first with Barclay Records in Paris then with a group she formed in France, called "The Blue Stars of Paris", they had a hit song  called "Lullabye in Birdland" which was sung in French. After meeting Verve founder/producer Norman Granz she was signed to the Verve label. Before Verve she did work with King Pleasure, and had records on the Mercury label.
   She ended up on the Fontana label after her tenure at Verve, there she recorded four albums,  during that time she recorded many Painted Smiles records, "May I Come In?" on Capitol Records, and "Rootin Tootin Songs Of 1963" on Hires Hits. As of 1973 she is produced solely on her Daffodil Records label. She also has her own music publishing company, called Blossom Dearie Music.                       
   Planet One is the first in a new series of CDs. It has a Brazilian flavor, which is not surprising because of my love of Brazilian music, singers, and musicians. The basic trio arrangements are what we play Luis, Ray and I when we are working as the Blossom Dearie trio. Cidinho is our brilliant musical director and has contributed a lot to these arrangements. I first heard him play at Via Brazil and the Zinc Bar. I was so knocked out that I invited him to join us that is the trio. Now we’ve added the fabulous guitar playing of Jay Berliner. It’s sort of a Brazilian quartet. Jay is a wonderful and versatile guitarist and has played on many of my Daffodil recordings, he knows just what to play for each style. Luis Peralta and I have been working together for about three years. Luis is from Buenos Aires and knows the samba inside out. He has an exceptional way of accompanying singers, that is me, especially when I play the piano.
   My audiences love him and the message they get across to me at last! a quiet drummer. The nature of this trio requires a sensitive ear and Luis fits in perfectly. Ray Kilday, a superb bass player, comes from a musical family. He knows the entire jazz repertoire and works with many wonderful musicians around town. He’s very sensitive as a accompanist. Since I am also very sensitive, I guess that makes us, with Jay one big sensitive quartet. Cidinho Teixeira has contributed to the quartet’s arrangements, especially introductions and endings, and guides the rhythm section right into the Brazilian mood, he also plays the piano accordion. The icing on the cake is Cesar Camargo Mariano, who has written the brilliant synthesizer orchestrations, Cesar is straight from Brazil and he’s the best. Grady Tate, the world-renowned drummer, helped me with my vocal phrasing which I call vocal persuasion, showing he has talents beyond drumming. And he does persuade me to sing it his way, which is the right way. Jim Czak, our superb, splendid, expert recording engineer, brought it all to life, he will receive the first Daffodil Grammy Award.
